About This Quote

The structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was the first important discovery by Francis Crick and James Watson in 1953. Their research was based on the idea that DNA is the chemical which stores all the information in the chromosomes of an animal's cells, all its genes. To discover the structure of DNA, they used X-rays to determine the shape of long threads of deoxyribonucleic acid, like threadlike molecules made out of sugar rather than like rope or paper or silk. The 'salt' part refers to sodium chloride, which is table salt. The 'deoxy' refers to the fact that the sugar in DNA is found in a form that has four atoms of oxygen attached to each atom of deoxyribose (a sugar molecule).
